How Long to Wait Before Getting an STD Test

For HIV specifically: the fourth-generation test is reliable from day 45, with a confirmatory test at day 90 for complete certainty. If your potential exposure was in the last 72 hours, do not wait for a test. Come in immediately for a PEP assessment. PEP prevents HIV infection when started promptly and stops working after 72 hours.
