Chlamydia Symptoms in Men and Women

When symptoms do appear in men, the most common are a burning feeling when urinating, discharge from the tip of the penis, and discomfort or swelling in one testicle. These can show up one to three weeks after exposure, or not at all.

If treated early, chlamydia clears completely with no lasting effects. Leave it alone and the risks go up fast.

In women, untreated chlamydia is a leading preventable cause of ectopic pregnancy, where a fertilised egg implants outside the uterus. That is a medical emergency. It is also a significant cause of infertility from fallopian tube scarring.

In men, the infection can reach the epididymis, the tube that carries sperm, causing a painful condition called epididymo-orchitis. This usually means significant scrotal pain and swelling, and in some cases affects fertility too.

Neither of these outcomes is inevitable. Both are entirely avoidable with a single course of antibiotics taken at the right time.

What Happens After Treatment

Do not have sex for seven days after finishing the antibiotic course. This applies whether you took the single-dose or the seven-day option. It prevents passing the infection to someone else before it has fully cleared.

Tell your recent sexual partners they may need to be tested. That conversation is awkward, but an untested partner can reinfect you the moment you resume contact.
