STDs in Pattaya: How Common Are They and What Are the Real Risks?

If you are reading this after a night out in Pattaya, or you are an expat wondering whether you should have got tested months ago, you are not alone. I see patients in this exact situation every week. Some have symptoms. A lot do not. The question I get asked most is not "what did I catch?" It is "do I even need to come in?"

The honest answer is usually yes. Pattaya has a large transient population and a very active nightlife, and that combination creates a higher-than-average risk for sexually transmitted infections. The good news is that most STDs are easy to test for, most are straightforward to treat when caught early, and getting tested here is fast, private, and available around the clock.

Why STDs in Pattaya Are More Prevalent Than Most Places

Pattaya has one of the most active sex tourism industries in Southeast Asia. That is not a judgment. It is a clinical reality that affects how infections spread through the population.

Large numbers of short-stay visitors, frequent partner changes, and inconsistent condom use all drive higher transmission rates. Thailand’s public health surveillance has recorded a sustained rise in syphilis cases in recent years, particularly among people aged 15 to 24, according to the Thai Ministry of Public Health. Gonorrhea and chlamydia remain consistently high across the country. HIV prevalence in certain populations in Pattaya is well above the national average.

This does not mean every encounter leads to infection. It means the background risk here is genuinely higher than in most places tourists come from, and that should inform your decisions.

The Most Common STDs in Pattaya and Their Real Risks

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

These are the two infections I test for most often. Chlamydia is probably the most common STD I see in tourists at the clinic. Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms at all. Left untreated, it can cause serious complications over time.

Gonorrhea is more likely to cause symptoms, particularly in men, but not always. The bigger concern in Thailand is antibiotic resistance. Drug-resistant gonorrhea strains are circulating here and across Southeast Asia, so treatment now typically requires a specific injectable antibiotic. Walking into a pharmacy and buying something off the shelf is a genuinely bad idea for this one.

Syphilis

Syphilis is making a real comeback in Thailand. The first sign is often a painless ulcer that goes away on its own. Many people assume they are fine when it disappears. They are not. Syphilis keeps progressing silently if it is not treated. Caught early, it is cured with a single antibiotic injection. Caught late, it is a much bigger problem.

HIV and Hepatitis B

HIV transmission is a real risk with unprotected sex in Pattaya. Hepatitis B is even more easily transmitted than HIV and is highly prevalent in Thailand. Both can be asymptomatic for months or years. Hepatitis B has a vaccine, which I strongly recommend for anyone who does not already have confirmed immunity. HIV does not have a vaccine, but there are highly effective prevention options I will come to shortly.

HPV and Herpes

HPV and herpes spread through skin-to-skin contact, so condoms do not fully protect against them. Neither can be cured, but both can be managed effectively. HPV vaccination is available and worth considering for adults who have not yet been vaccinated.

The Silent Risk Most People Underestimate

This is the part that actually matters most, and most people get it wrong.

Many of the most common STDs cause no symptoms, or symptoms so mild you would not notice them. Chlamydia is silent in most cases. Early syphilis produces a painless sore that heals without treatment, giving a false sense that nothing is wrong. HIV in the first few weeks can feel like a brief flu, or nothing at all.

The mistake I see most often is people waiting until they feel something before getting tested. By that point, infections have often been present for weeks or months. Routine testing after any unprotected encounter is the right approach. Not symptom-triggered testing.

When to Get Tested After Potential Exposure in Pattaya

Timing matters a lot, especially if you are on a short holiday and your window period may fall after you fly home.

Gonorrhea and chlamydia can usually be detected one to two weeks after exposure. Syphilis is more reliable at three to six weeks. A fourth-generation HIV test detects both the virus protein and your antibody response, and is reliable at four weeks. An RNA PCR test can pick up HIV earlier, around ten days after exposure, which is useful if you need a result before leaving Thailand.

If your exposure was within the last 72 hours and you are worried about HIV, come in immediately. That is not about testing. That is about PEP, which I will explain next.

If your window period falls after you return home, do not skip testing because of that. Test for what you can before you leave, then get retested at home for anything that needs more time.

What to Do If You Had Unprotected Sex in Pattaya

The most time-critical issue is HIV exposure within the last 72 hours. PEP, post-exposure prophylaxis, is a 28-day course of medication that can prevent HIV infection if started quickly enough. Every hour counts. Come in the same day. Doctor Pattaya is open 24 hours a day, so there is no reason to wait until morning or after the weekend.

If it has been more than 72 hours, PEP is no longer an option, but testing still is. Book a full sexual health screen and tell the doctor what happened and when, so we can recommend the right tests at the right time.

Do not go to a pharmacy and self-medicate. I say this to patients regularly. Antibiotics without knowing what you have can mask an infection without curing it, create resistance, and delay proper treatment. A quick consultation costs far less than the complications of an untreated infection.

Prevention in Pattaya Beyond Just Using a Condom

Condoms reduce risk significantly for most STDs. For HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, consistent correct condom use makes a real difference. But they are not perfect, and they do not protect against everything.

PrEP, pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a daily medication for HIV-negative people that provides very strong protection against HIV. If you are sexually active in Pattaya with multiple partners, or you are an expat who has been here a while and having unprotected sex, PrEP is worth a serious conversation with a doctor. The evidence for its effectiveness is strong.

Hepatitis B vaccination is a short course of injections that provides permanent protection. I recommend it to anyone without confirmed immunity. HPV vaccination is also available for adults and significantly reduces the risk of certain HPV-related cancers.
