Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus, specifically the low-risk strains HPV 6 and 11. These strains cause visible warts but are not the same types associated with cervical or anal cancer. Those are a separate group of high-risk strains entirely.
HPV spreads through skin-to-skin sexual contact. Condoms reduce the risk but do not eliminate it, because the virus lives in the skin around the genitals, not only inside the body. You can carry HPV and pass it on without ever seeing a single wart yourself.

There is no single best treatment for everyone. The right choice depends on where the warts are, how many there are, and what is most practical for your situation.

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart tissue. It is fast, well-tolerated, and works well for small clusters. Electrocautery uses a fine electrical current to remove warts directly and is a good option for larger or more persistent ones. Will Genital Warts Come Back After Treatment?
This is the question most patients actually want answered, so here is the straight version. Clearing visible warts does not mean HPV has left your body. The virus can stay in surrounding skin tissue without causing any visible warts at all, which is why some patients see warts return weeks or months after a successful treatment.
Roughly a fifth to a third of patients see warts come back within the first three months. Factors that raise your risk include smoking, a weakened immune system, and incomplete initial treatment. If you have been diagnosed with genital warts, your current or recent sexual partners should know. HPV passes easily, and your partner may already carry it without any visible symptoms. Avoid sexual contact while topical treatments like imiquimod or podofilox are active on the skin, as these can directly irritate a partner. Condom use after treatment reduces the risk of passing HPV on, though it does not eliminate it entirely.

If you have had genital warts, the HPV vaccine Gardasil 9 can still be worth having. Most people are exposed to one or two HPV strains, not all of them. The vaccine protects against strains you have not yet encountered, reducing your risk of future warts and, importantly, higher-risk strains linked to certain cancers.
