A person with chronic infection may have no symptoms for years. The liver, though, is quietly taking damage. Persistent inflammation causes scarring, and over time that scarring can progress to cirrhosis, which is severe and permanent. From there, the risk of liver failure and liver cancer climbs significantly.
The good news is that antiviral treatment can control the virus, protect the liver, and substantially reduce those risks, even if it cannot fully eliminate the infection. The worst outcomes are not inevitable. They are the result of not knowing and not acting.
