A lab test uses a blood sample, urine sample, or swab sent to a laboratory. PCR testing detects the actual genetic material of a bacteria or virus, which makes it more precise, especially for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The trade-off is that it takes longer.

What Is the Window Period and Why Does It Matter?

Every STD test has a window period. That is the gap between when you were exposed and when the test can actually detect the infection. If you test too soon, the result can come back negative even if you are infected. This is not a fault of the test. Your body simply has not had enough time to produce detectable levels of the infection yet.

For chlamydia and gonorrhea, most PCR tests are reliable from about one to two weeks after exposure. For syphilis, allow two to four weeks. For HIV, a 4th generation lab test is reliable from around 18 to 45 days after exposure, with most people testing accurately by day 45.

If you had a possible exposure in the last 48 to 72 hours, testing right now may not give you a useful result. What matters most in that window is whether you need post-exposure prophylaxis, known as PEP. PEP is an urgent HIV medication that must be started within 72 hours of exposure. A confirmatory lab test is always done next, and that takes one to two days.

One more thing worth knowing: if someone is HIV positive, on treatment, and has an undetectable viral load, the evidence strongly supports that they cannot transmit the virus to a partner.
