What Gardasil 9 Covers and Why It Matters
HPV, human papillomavirus, is a sexually transmitted infection that most sexually active people encounter at some point. Most of the time the body clears it quietly. But some strains cause genital warts, and others, left unchecked over years, can lead to cervical, anal, penile, and throat cancers.
Gardasil 9 targets nine HPV strains: 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Strains 16 and 18 are behind the majority of HPV-related cancers. Strains 6 and 11 cause most cases of genital warts. Older four-strain vaccines left gaps that Gardasil 9 closes, and that matters in Southeast Asia where several of the additional strains are clinically significant.
HPV Vaccine Age Limits: What the Guidelines Actually Say for Adults
Up to age 26, this is straightforward. If you missed the vaccine in your teens, come in and get it. No debate needed.
Between 27 and 45, the guidance shifts to what clinicians call shared decision-making. That simply means we sit down, look at your history and your situation, and work out whether vaccination will realistically benefit you. The vaccine works best before exposure to a particular strain, but most people have not encountered all nine strains covered by Gardasil 9, even after years of sexual activity. In most cases I find a clear benefit worth pursuing. Over 45, it is less routinely recommended, but it is a conversation worth having rather than a door we close.
Who Benefits Most, and Why Men in Pattaya Are Often Overlooked
Most HPV content defaults to a female audience, and I want to address that directly. Cervical cancer gets the headlines, and fairly so. But Gardasil 9 is approved for men, and the reasons to get vaccinated are just as real.
Throat cancer linked to HPV is rising in men globally. Anal cancer prevention is clinically significant for any man, and particularly for men who have sex with men. Penile cancer and genital warts are both covered. Pattaya has a large expat and tourist population that skews male, and I see a consistent gap where men simply were not told this vaccine was for them. It is. Walk in and ask.
Already Sexually Active? Here Is What You Still Gain
This is the question that gives people pause. "I have probably already been exposed. Does the vaccine still do anything?" For most people, the answer is yes.
Unless you have encountered every one of the nine strains Gardasil 9 covers, which is exceptionally unlikely, there are strains left to protect against. Vaccination after some exposure still provides meaningful protection against strains you have not yet encountered. Pairing your first dose with an STD test at the same visit gives you a fuller picture of your sexual health in a single appointment, which a lot of our patients find genuinely useful.
How Many Doses Adults Need and How Far Apart
Adults aged 15 and over need three doses. The schedule runs at zero, one to two months, and six months. This differs from the two-dose schedule used for children aged 9 to 14, who respond more strongly and need one less dose.
The spacing matters. You cannot compress the schedule significantly and expect the same protection. This is especially relevant for tourists, which I will come to next.

Most people starting the vaccine here are not staying for six months. Some are on a two-week holiday. Some are passing through on a longer trip across Asia.
